GOVERNMENT ACCUSED OF BUNGLING PANIC BUYING IN AUSTRALIA , (Special Australian Correspondent) (Received May 12, 11.35 p.m.) (N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY, May 12. All rationed shops were closed in Sydney at 11 o’clock this morning. Some shops opened their doors for only a few minutes to admit a great crush of customers and then closed for the day, their ration quota sold out. Other cities report similar orgies 0 of buying in what is generally admitted to be the greatest shopping rush in the history of Australia. Almost every shop assistant can tell au amazing tale of panic buying by men as well as by women . . . The Leader of the Opposition (Mr A. W. Fadden) has accused the Government and the Minister for War Organisation (Mr J. J. Dedman) for having “ bungled ” the clothes rationing. The action of the Australian public in resorting to “panic buying” was as Mr A. W. Fadden (Leader of the Opposition) put it, "A sorry spectacle for a nation as greatly threatened as Australia.” It is to be hoped that when clothes rationing becomes law in New Zealand that our people will act with decorum, and not embarrass the Government, or retail stores by going “haywire” as the Aussies did. New Zealanders invariably buy high quality goods, and our opinion is that they will net lose ’their heads when clothing rationing Is introduced. They will, instead, be content and feel safe In the knowledge that the good quality garments which they were wise enough to purchase In the past can be cleaned and pressed time after time. HAVE NO FEAR OF CLOTHES RATIONING. Clothing cleaned and pressed by Taylor’s will OUTWEAR THE WAR. By making full use of the services which Taylor’s so inexpensively provide, panic buying becomes unnecessary. “To-day Is Monday” . . . conveniently situated are Taylor’s depots:—o7BA Colombo Street, opposite Ballantynes ... and 57 Kilmore Street, near Normal School.
