MARKET FOR SMALL PEARS
DETAILS OF SCHEME AWAITED Details of a scheme to facilitate the marketing of small pears, which at present are not allowed in the grade, are expected from the Internal Marketing Division by orchardists to-day. This advice was given to the Canterbury Fruitgrowers’ Association at the annual meeting last evening by the president (Mr B. T. Turner). “Pears this year are setting a great price,” said Mr Turner, stating that graded fruit was being marketed in Wellington for 16s to 18s to a 401b case. He said that he had a case of two-inch Winter Cole pears valued in Christchurch recently, and it was reported that they would be worth 6s 6d to 7s for a 201b case, but the regulations would not permit growers to put them on the market because they were under-sized. “It’s a shame the fruit can’t be sold,” he added. Speaking of the sending of remits to the fruitgrowers’ conference, Mr Turner said it was a waste of time, as nothing ever came of thjem. It would be far better to deal directly with the Government, he declared. It was decided to defer consideration of remits until the next meeting. Officers elected were:—President, Mr B. T. Turner: vice-presidents, Messrs G. Allington and F. W. Sisson; secre-tary-treasurer, Mr E. J. Freeman; committee, Messrs F. Zimmerman, A. Illingworth, G. Mottram, W. E. Davidson. R. Hamilton, and C. J, Blair; delegates to fruitgrowers' provincial conference, Messrs Freeman, Sisson, Zimmerman, Illingworth, Mottram, Davidson, Blair, Hamilton, and Turner.
