THE BAYONET
Sir, —H, G. Bayonne wholly misreads my intention when I commented recently upon employment of bayonetarmed sentries outside Hereford Street Post Office. In my submitted letter I suggested futility of proposing to defend Post Office with a bayonet, against an enemy who most certainly will possess automatic weapons and hand grenades. And I supported this contention by remarking that a recognised military expert. Tom Wintringham. has himself condemned such use of bayonets in London's Whitehall. All this was deleted. Not surprising, therefore, that critic Bayonne concluded that my- comments referred to general use of bayonet instead of. as I intended. to its particular use as a weapon to protect Hereford Street Post Office.—Yours, etc.. WM. L, ROBERTSON. Sir, —I would like to endorse the remarks of H. G. Bayonne. The value of the bayonet has been proved in many campaigns. I would also suggest a return to wooden battleships and bows and arrows. History tells us about their efficacy in many a campaign.—Yours. etc., TRADITION. March 16, 1942.
