GAMING ACT CHARGE j i LETTER TO AUCKLAND POLICEWOMAN (P.S.S.) AUCKLAND, March 16. A charge of sending to a police-1 woman on December 27 a tetter, with intent to induce her to appywhha view to obtaining advice fox the purpose of betting on racehorses was brought under the Gaming Actagainst William John Brown befo ? e^ tv J ' Luxford, S.M. A plea of guilty was entered by Mr S. W. Tong, who appeared for defendant. Two publications were produced, one a racing paper and the other a weekly paper, by Detective-Sergeant J. Trcthewey In each were advertisements the responsibility for the insertion of which was admitted by defendant. The advertisements read as follows: —“Make profit out of racing. My advice makes you confident.” “Make money at racing. Follow my advice and B.A. winner. Readers were invited to apply to a | private box. i Constable L, B. Brocket!, a police-! woman, wrote to the box number and received an unsigned letter at her private address. She then forwarded 10s to the box address and later received a telegram which gave the names of seven horses running at Cambridge. “None of the horses won. although one came second and another third,” said Detective-Sergeant Trethewey. "The offence is serious from the public s point of view.” Mr Tong said defendant did not batten on the community for a living. He was employed by the Public Works Department and received a war pension; as he was disabled in the last war.; Ordinary forms of sport were not open; to him and he had made an intensive | study of racing form. He gave advice j for the investment of money on horses through the totalisator. Defendant was fined £ls and costs.
