TINWALD EWE FAIR

TOP PRICK 10/- FOR TWO-TOOTHS A feature of the Tinwald ewe fair yesterday was the two-tooth section, which comprised some excellent sheep, all in good condition. The top price was 40s, obtained by J. Cocks (Eiffelton) for 143 Romney-merino cross, which were bigframed and well-woolled ewes in firstclass condition. Mr Cocks also headed the sales at last year’s fair with a line of Romneys. This vear Romneys made up to 39s bd for 50 sold by L. Reveley, Hinds. There was a ready demand for all two-tooths showing quality, and very few lines were passed in. Adult sheep, mostly tour-year-old ewes, sold exceptionally well considering the uncertainty of the sheep industry, and values were comparable with rates ruling at recent fairs in Canterbury, being perhaps a shade higher than similar sheep offered at North Canterbury. Farmers were keen to buy from straight lines of well-known breeders, showing a preference for fine-woolled sheep off tussock country. The best price under this heading was 23s 3d for a line of 277 entered by J. Campbell, Mayfield. Surrey Hills sheep were again in good demand this year, realising up to 2)s, and more than 600 from the Mount Somers Estate brought 18s. Coldstream Corriedales soid at the same figure. Four-tooths. which were a small section of the yarding, made up to 295, but some of the best lines were passed in. Six and cighl-tooths mixed realised up to 19s 6d, four-year 23s 3d, and five-year up to 17s. The total entry was 17,855, including about 8000 two-tooths. compared with 15,000 last year, and 29,000 in 1940. FAIRLIK EWE FAIR The yarding at the Fairlie ewe fair comprised aboiit 20,009 sheep. The following are representative prices: Best two-tooth Romney owes. 30s 3d to 38s fid; medium two-tooth ewes, 25s 9d to 30s 3d; half bred, 14s 3d to 24s 9d; best ewe lambs, 26s 3d to 28s 3d; medium. 18s 9d to 255; full-mouthed ewes, 15s to 19s 8d; others from 10s 3d. ' OAMARU GRAIN MARKET With extremely good weather conditions during last week, harvest operations proceeded satisfactorily, and stacks of oats and wheat and barley are making their appearance ‘in every district. Judging by reports, threshing operations will extend well into the winter months. Deliveries of wheat have been heavy, and the lines threshed are of good quality, botli for colour and weight. Several specimens of Dreadnought submitted weighed G4lb to the bushel. Difficulty is still being experienced with headed wheat, which is not in the best of condition. Yield returns during the week have set the high average of 50 to GO bushels 1o the acre, and it appears certain that the average yield this season will show an increase of from 12 to 15 per cent, on lasi year, and will most likely stabilise at about 45 bushels fo the acre. Oafs have been offering during Hu week, and although weights are above the average, the colour is distinctly disappointing. The market, if anything, is inclined to weaken. This is due to the fact that merchants arc still awaiting a pronouncement by the Price Tribunal as to the lifting ol the price to 3s lid a bushel for white oats, which has now been proI mised early Ibis week. Cartons have been freely offered during the last few days, and transactions were made on the basis of 3s 3d, 3s 4d, and 3s 5d on trucks. There has been some inquiry for Dun oats, and good, heavy linos, dark in colour have ! commanded up to 3s 6d. on trucks. Some business is reported in Cape barley al prices ranging from 3s Gd to 3s 9d Last season merchants wore able 1o arrange contracts lor the growing of Chevalier barley (principally the Plumagi Archer variety), which is ol the bes* qualitv for brewing purposes Unfortun alely lor the ' district, however, weathei conditions at the time ol ripening were adverse, and the samples so tar submitted are more or less discoloured. Prices rule as follows: Windrow, 4s 7id:, stook-thresh-cd 4s lid; slack-threshed, 5s 3d; all on trucks, sacks extra. A line of this vanctj from the stack went 75 bushels, and one from the stook 51) bushels to the acre There has been some inquiry for black barley, but supplies have not been offering SECURITIES IN ENGLAND (U.P.A.)
