——♦—_ ORGANISING EMERGENCY LABOUR FORCE A decision to set up district utilisation committees to deal with the organising of an emergency labour force for certain urgent work and with manpower problems in the industry generally has been reached by the Manpower Utilisation Council of the engineering industry, Wellington, which inet on Thursday. A statement to this effect has been supplied by the Director of National Service (Mr J. S. Hunter) to the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, a copy having been received by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. The council, it is stated, also agreed that in centres where there are railway workshops there should be three representatives each of employers and workers, one of these oh each side directly representing the workshops; that in other centres there should be two representatives of each class: that each local committee should have power to co-opt such other members as it may find necessary; and that the district manpower officer should be a member of the committee. Centres at which committees are desired are Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch. Dunedin, Whangarei, Hamilton, Gisborne, Napier-Hastings, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Nelson. Westport, Greymouth, Timaru, Invercargill. A meeting of the combined executive of the metaj trades group of the association and the Ironmasters’ Association will be held to-morrow to decide on nominations.
