TURF GOSSIP At Oamaru The Oamaru Jockey Club has received an excellent list of acceptances for its autumn meeting next Saturday, most of„the South Island centres having representatives. In these days of restricted transport, the club was fortunate in securing a special train from Christchurch for passengers and horses on the morning of the races, an arrangement that will save owners a good deal in travelling expenses. Bad Passage Belle Fox collided with Matapan at the start of the Pacific Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, and lost a good deal of ground, and later when endeavouring to get up to the leaders passing the false rail, she was again checked. She was therefore responsible for a sterling effort to be less than a half length away from the winner at the finish. There is no doubt about Belle Fox’s smartness, and she promises to develop into the best class. Bright Future Whackie. winner of two races at Trentham. is by the Karamu horse Arausio, who is not represented by many horses racing those days. Whackie is a big, long-striding three-year-old. and the well-known Napier trainer. W. McKinnon, will win many more races with him. Strenuous Period Hearth was not as slow as usual over the early stages of the open sprint at Trentham. and when she moved up to the leaders about a furlong from home she appeared likely to make a strong challenge, but her run was short-lived. No doubt this game mare is feeling the effects of a hard programme of racing and travelling in the last few months. Consistent Performer Arctic Dawn is due for a win soon. He ran another solid race in the Thompson Handicap, and at one stage of the run home he appeared likely to go on to victory, but weakened in the last few strides. His next racing will be at the Great Easter meeting at Riccarlon. For Hurdling Ever England was nominated for fiat races at the Riverton Easter meeting on the chance that his name would have been removed from the schooling list. As the application for reinstatement was refused, he is not eligible to race in fiat events. It is intended to start him off on a course of hurdling, and as most of the Hunting Song breed have done well when put to jumping, he may soon make good. Looks Likely The Oamaru Cup should be one of the best middle distance races staged on the course for many years. Sally Lunn. who it now out of hacks, and will be making her first appearance m open company, will be an interesting candidate and is actually entitled to be one of the favourites. A Hurried Trip Atreus was never prominent in the Thompson Handicap. There was some excuse for this form, as he arrived at Trentham only a few hours before the race. He was originally booked to be taken up on Wednesday with Fur Coat, but the latter’s departure was delayed until Friday in order to see whether he had recovered from his recent lameness. Fur Coat, however, was not well enough to go, and Atreus had to go alone on F-’dav night. No Opening Enjoyment, who was somewhat unlucky in the high-weight event at Trentham. is an aged horse by Delightment from Exalted, by Leighton from Flora Macdonald, by Boniform. Delightment is by Catmint from Delightful, by General Latour. .mid was bred in the Auckland district in 1922 Enjoyment'was hemmed in in the middle of Saturday’s field throughout the middle stages, end bv the lime he got out of the ruck in the straight Ringloss had a substantoal lead Enjoyment finished exceptionally fast, and would have won with a little further to go. TROTTING NOTES N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. Nominations for all handicap events to be decided at the New Zealand Metropolitan Easter meetings on April 4 and II will close on Thursday next at 5 p.m. At the same time a forfeit of £6 will fall due for the N.Z. Futurity Stakes, the race having been taken over from the Ashburton Trotting Club —6 Westland T.C. Acceptances for the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting close this evening. 2398 A Speedy Trotter At one stage Royal Worthy looked like being one of the best trotters in New Zealand, but in his last few starts previous .to Saturday's race at Timaru he showed unsteadiness of gait that did not promise well. In his latest effort he made a bad beginning, but Ids trotting over the last mile and a half in the Temuka Handicap was one of the best exhibitions seen on the Washdyke racecourse. Although he was set to give away only 12 yards his early mistake left him giving the leader, Lislowel. 100 yards. Over the lust halfmile he trotted at a great speed and Listow'el, making the pace, had to be hard driven to win by a bare length. Royal Worthy had another change of drivers. M. Scoon being in the sulky. Once Royal Worthy learns to begin quickly he may prove to be one of the best trotters racing. Expensive to Backers Bomber has proved expensive to his supporters during the last few months, and his third in the Temuka Handicap returned a very small profit to those who had invested on both the win and place machines. In all his races this season, Bomber has shown rare stamina, and with any luck would have won more than once. He is only four years old. and the hard tasks he has been set against older trotters may not improve him. In the opening event at Timaru he attempted to give starts up to 72 yards, but as the winner. Mervyn Derby, improved on his handicap I from 3min 57sec for a mile and five I furlongs to 3min 45sec, he set the backI marker a very severe task. In this race the unlucky horse may have been Loughros w..0, when apparently a match for Mervyn Derby, made a break and lost a lot of ground. Again settled to her task she showed phenomenal speed, and in the run home out-trotted all but Mervyn Derby. Loughros is a six-year-old by Wrack from Edith Voyage, and with limited experience at present, she gives every promise of entering the better classes. Belting at Timaru Highrate trotted fairly well in the opening event at Timaru to finish fourth. Had he won he would have paid nearly two-thirds of a century, and Warline in the Fairlie Handicap would have paid more than £l5O to win. In the Timaru Cup, however, Burt Scott was backed down to a very short price, and had he won he would have paid less than oven money. Speedy But Unsound For a long time Blaydon has been unsound but he has won two races in the last month, a tribute to the care bestowed on him by the New Brighton trainer, C. Isaacson. Blaydon failed to stand a preparation on hard tracks, but at New Brighton he has been given a course of work on the sand and in the sea. He was very sore after his latest race, and does not give promise of standing up to much hard work. WYNDHAM T.C.
