SALUTATION WINS

THOMPSON HANDICAP PALFREY’S ST. LEGER (0.R.) WELLINGTON. March 14. The Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting was concluded at Trentham today in fine weather. The attendance was exceptionally large, including many hundreds in uniform, and speculation was very spirited. The sum of £98,628 (win £42,179, place £56,449) was handled, as against £32,390 on the concluding day, also a Saturday last year, an increase of £16,238. The track provided reasonably firm going, in spite of a heavy downpour early last evening. The principal event, the Thompson Handicap, lost a little of its interest by the defection of Kindergarten, for which he would have been an outstanding favourite, but, in his absence, the big pool was well distributed, and a spectacular race was witnessed. The winner. Salutation, added to her already good record by a meritorious win from another three-year-old filly in Premature, who lost valuable ground at the start, and who executed one of the most thrilling finishing runs seen on the course for many years. The St. Leger Stakes was, as usual, run at a muddling pace for about nine furlongs, and then resolved into the customarv sprint home, in which Palfrey outstayed Balblair Palfrey’s owner, Mr E. Hay, of Pigeon Bay. was not able to be oresent to see his colt win. The trainer, T. H. Gillett. who was also absent, won the race in 1928 for the late Mr J. S. Barrett, with Satrap. The Champion Hack Handicap was won well by Sally Lunn, who has now proved to be a bargain, in spite of the big sum (700 guineas) paid for her a few months ago. On the first day at Trentham he was forced wide out when making a promising move, and lost any chance he had. On Saturday, he hopped out well, but got the tape caught in his bridle, and this trailed behind him throughout. He was going alright at the end of two furlongs where another horse stood on the tape and ierked Not Out back several places. This happened again turning for home and by this time Not Out was at the rear of the field. The tape was still attached to his bridle when he returned. Such mishaps are not uncommon at Trentham where the barrier is inclined to fly clear at both ends, but to lag in the middle, and many horses in this part of the field have been hung up. Galloped On , „„ , Eulogist would probably have filled a place in the Thompson Handicap but for an unfortunate mishap during the running. He was going well on the outside of the second line rounding the home turn, when he was forced over in front of another horse and was badly galloped on. He went back immediately, but battled on gamely over the last furlong, and was close up in fifth place. When he returned, it was found he had suffered a severe gash in a hind leg, and there is no likelihood of the horse racing at Oamaru. where his prospects looked bright. Eulogist suffered from a similar misfortune on his last trip tc Trentham. A Good Meeting Riccarton riders had a profitable innings at the Trentham meeting. On the first day A. E. Ellis and L. J. Ellis with three wins each, and ,S. Green (one win) accounted for seven out of the eight races. L. J. Ellis and Green had two second placings. On Saturday Green won three races and L. J. Ellis, A. Messervy, and P. Spratt one each, so that Riccarton horsemen, collectively won 13 out of the 16 races carded. Riccarton horses also fared well at the meeting. Good Scout was the only winner on the first day, with Arctic Dawn and Leighnor as second place-getters, but last Saturday. King Herod, Palfrey, Salutation, and Sally Lunn were successful, and Arctic Dawn and Good Scout gained third place money. A Bargain Missed King Herod was passed in at 160 guineas at the Trentham sale on Friday. the reserve being 200 guineas. As he won £350 on Saturday, his owner. Mr J. H. Grigg. was certainly fortunate in retaining him. King Herod has grown a good deal in the last few months, and has not been very robust in consequence, but as he becomes more solid, he promises to develop into a useful stake-earner. At a Disadvantage There was some confident support for Last Effort in the high-weight event at Trentham, but the big three-year-old was never really dangerous, It was asking a good deaf of one of his age to tackle an 11 furlong journey under welter weights, especially as he was having his fourth race only, and he cannot be passed over on account of his failure. An Excellent Record Salutation has proved a valuable stake-earner for Mrs H. D. Greenwood since being purchased as a yearling for 230 guineas. Her record now is six wins, and she has won £3075 (£2620 this season) in stakes. Salutation finished gamely in a tight finish on Saturday, but was no doubt somewhat lucky in that Premature lost considerable ground at the start and conceded the leaders several lengths’ start commencing the home run. Premature then reeled off one of the most brilliant bursts of speed seen on the course for some time. She was literally flying at the post and would no doubt have been the winner with a little further to go. Salutation will go to Ellerslie later in the week to contest the Great Northern Oaks on Easter Saturday. This classic, worth £325 to the winner, is likely to provide another clash between Salutation and Premature. TROTTING NOTES N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. Nominations for all handicap events to be decided at the New Zealand Metropolitan Easter meetings on April 4 and 11 will close on Thursday next at 5 p.m. At the same time a forfeit of £6 will fall due for the N.Z. Futurity Stakes, the race having been taken over from the Ashburton Trotting Club. . —6 A Muddling Race The first two furlongs in the Timaru Cup were run smartly, but Burt ScoU then took over the lead and slowed the race to funeral speed. He was pulling very hard, and with his head in his chest he led until three furlongs from home, when more than half the drivers seemed to realise that it was time they made a move. Then there was a general rush for positions, and it seemed that the driver of Burt Scott, V. Alborn, was not prepared for the move. With Stormtost he was first into the straight, but he could not pace it with J. B. Pringle’s gelding, and it seemed that several other horses would beat him. Alborn seemed to realise this and ceased driving. The momentary respite appeared to give

Burt Scott pew life, and he immediately set out after the leader again. At every stride he was lessening the gap, but the distance was too short. What promised to be a great race was completely spoilt by the dawdling pace set. A Utility Horse Poker Face, winner of the Wai-iti Handicap at Timaru on Saturday, has had a chequered career, and his latest effort marked his first appearance m public since he won the Avonmore Handicap at the Methven meeting in 1939.’ In his early racing he showed great promise, and after winning several races he was leased to a patron of R. B. Berry’s stable. He proved unsound, however, and' was returned to his owner. For the last two years he has performed menial duties between the shafts of a dray, and only in the last few weeks has any serious attempt been made to train him. He is the real utility horse and appeared to be quite sound after his race on Saturday. Juvenile Pacers Tam o’Shanter, the «winner of the Timaru Nursery Stakes, is a goodlooking gelding by U. Scott from Escapade. and is bred the way of a champion, U. Scott was imported from America by Mr J. R. McKenzie, and is also the sire of Highland Scott, who won the race in 1939. and like Tam o’ Shanter was bred by the Riccarton sportsman, Mr W. J. Morland. Tam o’ Shanter is the first horse owned by Mr T. R. McGregor, who leased him from Mr Morland last September, and only a few days ago exercised the right to purchase inserted in the lease. Tam o’ Shanter was hard pressed to beat Gold Sheik, by Sandydale—Mary de Oro, and Captain Morant, by Rey de Oro—Bonny Logan, and there were several others, including Nola Scott, handy. While the juvenile pacers stuck to their work under hard driving it is doubtful if there was one in the race as good as Two's Loose, Walter Moore, Southern Chief, Shadow Maid, or Highland Scott at the same age. Solidity, rather than brilliance, was a feature of the race. It was the first victory in this event for the owner (Mr McGregor), trainer (R. J. Humphries), and driver (D. C. Watts), and the time, 2min 16 4-ssec, was the slowest in the last five years.
