♦ SEVENTY-NINTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE The seventy-ninth annual conference of the North Canterbury District M.U.1.0.0.F. Friendly Society was opened on Saturday morning in the Oddfellows’ Chambers. Bro. R. D. Smith, District Grand Master, presided over an attendance of 44 delegates, representing 16 lodges. After declaring the conference opened, the District Grand Master gave an address in which he reviewed the year’s work. The report of the committee of management was received and adopted. The election of officers resulted:— District Grand Master, Bro,- J. W. Beagley; District Deputy Grand Master, Bro. E. B. Harris; committee of management, Bros. K. Howie, H. W. E. Parsons, C. G. R. O’Halloran, and O. P. Anderson; book examiners, Bros. N. E. Taylor, W. H. Larcombe, and W. R. Bullard; auditor, Bro. W, H. Larcombe; Deputies to M.C., Bros. J. W. Beagley, F. A. Iggo, and R. D. Smith; editor of handbook, Bro. W. D. Sabiston, Two remits were carried—(l) the amounts payable by the district benefit fund or the aged members’ contribution fund to lodges may be applied in reduction of the contributions (if any) payable by a member to the district medical fund; (2) that during the war country lodges be judged in the efficiency competition only at their own request. The financial position, which was said to have improved, was reviewed' as follows: —Lodge funds now amount to £119,226 15s 4d. an increase of £2969 11s lOd. The district funds have increased by £276 3s 8d to £28,619 Is 2d, the grand total of funds amounting to £147,845 16s 6d. The sum of £5376 3s 3d was paid during the year in sick pay and £990 for funeral benefits.
