JAPANESE ADVANCES TO VATICAN

♦ REPRESENTATIONS BY UNITED STATES NEW YORK, March 13. The State Department has made urgent representations to the Vatican regarding the intention of the Japanese to establish a diplomatic mission to the Holy See. The Japanese move is regarded as an attempt to claim the Vatican’s sanction for the war against the Allies. The State Department has called the Pope’s attention to the Japanese atrocities recently disclosed by the British Foreign Secretary (Mr R. A. Eden). It is added that the Vatican’s acceptance of the Japanese demands would be regarded as a rebuff for the Christian world. It, is understood that similar representations to the Vatican have been made by the British.
