"WIN THE WAR” APPEAL
* CANTERBURY QUOTA OF £250,000
Every effort will be made in Canterbury to raise £250,000 by November in a “win the war’’ appeal for patriotic purposes. This was announced by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), as chairman of the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council.
Money was urgently needed, he said, for comforts and equipment for the sick and wounded, food parcels and tobacco for prisoners of war, post-war relief and rehabilitation for returning men. comforts for the fighting men overseas, recreational facilities, social clubs and rooms, quarterly parcels, wool for knitted articles, military band equipment, regimental funds, libraries, facilities and service in New Zealand camps, and help for next-of-kin. Zone quotas (calculated on a basis of population) were as follows: Chev-iot-Amuri £4039, North Canterbury £16,954, Metropolitan £148,271, Ellesmere £5340, Peninsula £3693, Mal-vern-Tawera £4040, Selwyn £1616, Ashburton £19,756, Geraldine-Temuka £9291, Timaru-Mackenz.e £27,226. Waimate £9894. Circulars have been issued to various organisations by the patriotic council, asking for the support of all patriotic organisations at a meeting on Monday, at which the formation of a strong metropolitan committee will be promoted. , The circulars announce that under the reorganised zone system the metropolitan zone now covers Christchurch city, the Lyttelton, Riccarton. and Sumner boroughs, and Halswell, Heathcote, Paparua, and Waimain counties. It has been decided that one representative of each local body should be appointed to form the nucleus of a metropolitan zone executive.
