GROWERS SUFFER BIG LOSS
♦ — MANY WINDFALLS IN STOKE OItCHAUDS (P.A.) NELSON, March 13. Apple and pear losses in the Stoke district as a result of Tuesday’s storm are estimated at 40,000 cases, of which up to 10,000 cases are pears. The rest of the apple-growing districts of Nelson were not affected. Jonathan and Delicious were just ready for picking when the sharp and localised storm stripped some of the trees. Individual losses in some cases amount to 2000 cases. One grower had 45 trees laden with fruit uprooted, while some suffered other losses, such as broken windmills and water tanks.
The Government has been approached to see how the marketing regulations can be relaxed to permit use to be made of windfalls which at present carpet the ground. One suggestion is that they be collected and distributed to camps and schools.
