RETALIATION BY BRAZIL
TORPEDOING OF SHIPS PARTIAL CONFISCATION OF AXIS FUNDS (Received March 13, 11.30 p.m.) (U.P.A.) RIO DE JANEIRO, Mar. 12. Dr. Vargas, President of Brazil, has decreed the partial confiscation of Axis funds and property in Brazil. The decree states that the property and rights of German, Japanese, and Italian persons must answer for the harm which has resulted from acts of aggression by their Governments. The money will be held as a guarantee of indemnity for this. Furious throngs of Brazilians, inflamed by torpedoing of Brazilian ships, assaulted big German department stores and other Axis enterprises in Rio de Janeiro’s main avenues. Screaming crowds shattered show windows and 'forced German firms and a pro-German newspaper to run up Brazilian flags. Thousands shouted; “Kill them. Traitors. Dogs.” The demonstration started when a German shouted: ‘‘Long live Germany.” German banks in the city were barricaded and guarded.
