FIRE-FIGHTING EQUIPMENT Methods of providing fire-fighting ? equipment for business premises in | Lyttelton at the minimum cost will be j considered at a meeting in the town I next week. The meeting , has been called bv the Mayor and Chief Warden (Mr F E. Sutton), who stated yesterday that the owners and occupiers of all business premises were required to provide appliances such as buckets and shovels and also a supply of sand in case of an air raid. Provision would also have to be made for the accommodation of any persons in the building at the time of the emergency. My reason for calling the business people together Is that I am desirous of cutting the cost to a minimum, and it may be that arrangements can be made whereby several can work in one group,” Mr Sutton added. Postings to E.P.S. Squads Members of the works and transport sections of the Lyttelton E.P.S. _were posted to squads at a meeting on Thursday evening. The duties of the works j

section in an emergency were explained by the borough foreman (Mr J. T. McCormick), and include demolition, repairs to gas and water mains, and attention to the drainage and sanitation services. The chief duty of the transport section will be the control of traffic, members being allotted various positions in the town. This work was outlined by the borough inspector (Mr G. M. Daniel). Those in the works section will meet every Thursday for instruction. There are 40 members in the works section and 33 in the transport.
