MR SCRIMGEOUR’S POSITION

WATERSIDERS’ UNION CRITICISED i RIGHT OF OTHER MEN TO ADMISSION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 12. Interviewed to-day concerning the report that Mr C. G. Scrimgeour, Controller of Commercial Broadcasting, had been admitted to the Watersiders' Union at Auckland, the Minister for Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) expressed surprise that the union should see fit to block hundreds of applications by men resident in Auckland, with young families, who, for years, had endeavoured to join the union in order to obtain work op the waterfront, along with many of what were called “seagulls,” who stand by and help in rush periods and get boats turned-round quickly, but who cannot gain admittance to the union. “These men, surely, are more entitled to be admitted to the union than a high-salaried officer of the broadcasting service," said the Minister. “However, the matter is being looked into and the question of whether the union will be allowed to continue as a closed union will be considered.”
