PROPOSAL

CHURCH UNION SUPPORTS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 12. The following resolutions were adopted by the annual Assembly of the Congregational Union of New Zealand: This assembly assures the New Zealand Alliance of its hearty support in any representations it may make to the Prime Minister and the Government with a view to setting up a Royal Commission under the presidency of a Supreme Court judge for the purpose of making a public investigation of the ravages of the licensed liquor traffic on our national life, and particularly our war effort.

“This assembly resolves that immediate steps be taken to make common cause with representative leaders and people of all other Christian bodies in New Zealand with a view to concerted action in summoning our nation to face the full implications of the report on Japanese atrocities in Hong Kong made by Mr Anthony Eden." Tho following officers were elected: Chairman, Mr J. Gordon Smith (honorary pastor of the Auckland suburban churches': union preacher, the Rev, W. M. Garner: secretary, the Rev. F. de Lisle (re-elected): treasurer, Mr H. H. Miller (re-elected).
