ASHBURTON BOXER'S SUCCESS

Bandsman Ron Withell, of Ashburton, stepped back into the Middle East boxing limelight when he defeated the English cruiser-weight, Corporal Jenkinson, for the Cairo area light-heavy-weight title. He last fought in Egypt not long after arriving with the first contingent, and defeated the Australian former professional, Corporal Stevens. Withell had 24 fights in New Zealand with only two losses and one drawn bout. He represented New Zealand at the Empire Games in Australia in 1938. Beginning amateur boxing in 1937 he won the New Zealand heavy-weight title on his eighth appearance in the ring, beating Maurie McHugh on points, and also W. Lister. Two years later he won the light-heavy-weight title, beating Don Mullett, and also Rollinson, of Auckland. • At present Bob Scally. the Middle East top-flight professional heavyweight champion is ready to take on all comers. Withell, who has already fought an exhibition bout with Scally, said (hat if it could be arranged he would be willing to meet him.
