ECONOMY IN USE OF PETROL
APPEAL TO CANTERBURY FARMERS An appeal to farmers to practice the greatest possible economy in the use of petrol was made by the president of the North Canterbury branch of the Farmers’ Union (Mr R. G. Bishop) at a meeting of the executive yesterday, He said that stocks of petrol were very low, but an assurance had been received from the Oil Fuel Controller that petrol would be available for taking this season’s crop out and putting the next in. Mr R. T, McMillan suggested that there should be some better method of distributing petrol to farmers than under the present licensing plan. The monthly allowance was all right for motor-cars, but farmers should be allowed greater quantities, as there might be a hold-up during harvesting unless sufficient petrol was available. An allowance for a period of two or three months would be more satisfactory. Mr Bishop said farmers had been drawing petrol in yearly amounts, and the monthly ration was a good idea, as he knew of cases where the previous system had been abused.
