OBITUARY
REV. T. A. JOUGHIN A veteran minister and former president of the New Zealand Methodist Conference, the Rev. Thomas Alfred Joughin. died recently at his home at Mount Albert, Auckland. Mr Joughin came to New Zealand in 1880, at the age of 17. His first ministerial work was in the Maori Mission at Hokianga, where he spent six years. Leaving the mission, Mr Joughin took up circuit duty at Upper Thames, and after a visit to England he was stationed successively at Roxburgh, Rangiora, Waimate, Leeston, Timaru, and Papanui. For seven years he was chairman of the South Canterbury district, and in 1918 president of the Methodist Conference. In Freemasonry he was a past grand chaplain of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. He is survived by his wife, a son, and three daughters, MR 0. BALK The death has occurred at Wellington of Mr Oscar Balk, who for many years was well known in commercial circles in Dunedin as a principal of the firm of Messrs Wilson, Bmk. and Company. Lid. He was a foundation member of Die Otago Tramping Club, and of the Balmacewan Bowling Club, and until recently was annually a prominent and active figure at the bonspiel in Central Otago. He was patron of the Maori Hill Association Football Club, and for many years was an active member of the Dunedin Orphans’ Club. He was a former president of the Otago Chess Club, and also of the New Zealand Chess Association. MR A. JOHNSON (P.Au WELLINGTON, January 14. The death has occurred at Wellington of Mr Alexander Johnson, aged 78 who was for many years well known in the building trade. He was active in the welfare of young people, and on several occasions was president of the Sunday School Union.
