CLAIMS MADE BY

AERIAL ATTACKS ON WAKE ISLAND
NEW YORK, December 16. The Tokyo radio states that the Japanese, striking from all sides of the island, gained their first foothold on Guam at dawn yesterday at the port of Apra. The Tokyo radio announced that it had been officially stated that landing parties occupied the capital of Guam and captured 350 Americans. It is also officially claimed that Japan destroyed 197 United States aeroplanes in two days in the Philippines and sank an American destroyer, a submarine, and one service ship off Hawaii. The Domei agency reports that the Japanese landing on Wake island followed repeated Japanese aerial attacks. A barracks and warehouse were smashed and set on fire. Seven United States aeroplanes were brought down in a single day’s dog-fights over the island.
