GUN DOG TRIALS
GRAND PRIX RESULTS, Competitors from Invercargill gained the first three places in the first Grand Prix field trial to be held in New Zealand, which was conducted by the Canterbury Gun Dog Club yesterday. The trials were held over land and water in what was also the largest event of its kind yet held in New Zealand. The aggregate winner of the grand prix was Mr W. F. Clouston, of Invercargill. Messrs T. Pascoe and W. E. Hazlett, also of Invercargill, gained second and third places. In the land section the dogs were obliged to find a homer bird, the dogs standing to the shot, and the birds flying home. The dogs then continued to find a bird hidden in cover, standing again while the bird was shot and afterwards retrieving it to the handler. The dogs then continued to find a dead bird also hidden in cover, and retrieved it to hand. This was a most difficult test, and the majority of dogs gave good performances. The water section consisted of a double bird heel retrieve with two dogs,on the mark. The weather was considered ideal. The shooting was done by Messrs F, Truscott and W. Heney. The judge was Mr A, B. Dawson. Results were:— Grand Prix.—W. F, Clouston’s Labrador, water 93, land 95—total 188 points, 1; T. Pascoe’s c.c. retriever, Crownlea Major, 86, 93—179 points, 2; W. E.
