AT FLEMINGTON HIGH CASTE BEATS BEAU VITE MELBOURNE, November 8. The weather was fine and warm and the attendance good for the concluding day of the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting at Flemington. High Road, one of the outstanding juveniles last year, had his first success this season with a comfortable victory in the Batman Stakes, and broke a long run of ill-luck for bis trainer, L. Robertson. Art Union essayed to lead all the way, but weakened. Purchased for 400 guineas as a yearling, Leahero made an auspicious debut by leading all the way in the Flemington Stakes, and just beat Portsmouth. Register was a fast-finishing third. Pioneer was fancied, but ran a poor race. High Caste was given a wonderful reception wlren he had his third successive victory in the C. It. Fisher Plate. The only other horse to gain three successive victories was Alawa. High Caste was last early and. took charge at the furlong post. Beau Vile came again,/ but just missed. Tranquil Star was outclassed. The pace was slow earlv and was outside evens for the first three furlongs. The last three furlongs took .ISi’sec, The race was run to suit High Caste, but does, not detract from the merit of his win. He has now won approximately £33,000 in stakes. Maikai, last early* finished brilliantly In the V.R.C. Handicap. Yours Truly ran a good race, but was no match for the winner. Saul Improved on recent form for third but Son of Aurous disappointed. This was Maikai’s first win in 18 months. Winterset was not troubled in the MacLeod Steeplechase. He cost his owner, Mr H J. Ascot, 350 guineas last season, and has now won approximately £I6OO. His rider. L. Meenan. has the rare distinction of wining all four jumping races at the meeting. East End set a race record of Imin OJsec for an easy win m the Ottawa Stakes. His trainer, E. Fisher, and jockey. H. Badger, associated with East End’s win, completed a double with Carpentier’s win in the Final Handicap, an

excellent performance as he lost three lengths at the start. High Caste has now won 34 races and £33,515 In stakes, and is tenth on the list of stake winners. He is a likely runner in the Williams town Cup on Saturday. Evergreen is running in the same race. TURF GOSSIP A Great Family Happy Ending, winner of the New Zealand Cup, is an appropriately named five-year-old gelding by Beau Pore from Termination, by Kilbroney from Culmination by San Francisco from Slepfeldl ny Nordenfeklt from Steppe, a family that was long associated with the racing activities of the late Mr W. E. Bidwill, one ’ of New Zealand’s most prominent owners of some years back. When at Mr Bidwill’s stud at Featherston, Termination produced Stanchion, a Wellington Cup and Great Northern Hurdles winner, and on the death of her breeder, she was acquired by Mr J. D. McDotigall, who thus had the double satisfaction of breeding and owning a New Zealand Cup winner. Some outstanding horses have come from Stcpfeldt, including Delaware, Culmination, Elevation, Gravitation, Provocation, Tribulation. Ovation, and Reputation. She had her first foal, Stepfast. in 1897, and her last in 1918, and she was mated with the following sires:—St. Hippo, St. Leger, Seaton Delayal, San Francisco, Birkenhead. Martian, All Black, Demosthenes, and King Rufus. Lost Gear Court Dress, a three-year-old brother to Night Dress, ran an encouraging race in the Apprentices’ Handicap on Saturday. He was one of the last away but with half the journey covered he was out in front, and led into the straight, but his rider then lost an iron and the horse was soon out of the contest. On this form, Court Dress should have prospects in the Strowan Plate to-day. Grilse Grilse, winner of the Welcome Stakes, was bred at the Windsor Park Stud, Oamaru, by her owner, Mr E. E. Steele, who imported the dam, First Cast, when he took over the property on the dispersal of the Elderslie Stud. First Cast is by Salmon Trout, by The Tetrarch. Overlooked Some of the horses carded for the New Zealand Derby to-day have been left in by an oversight, two of them being Foreign Coin and No Caste, who are not at the meeting. The latter is by Lord Quex from a Tuata mare, and is trained by R. S. Bagby at Ellerslie. Kol Ragi Kol Ragl, engaged in the juvenile event at Riccarton to-day, is a colt by Arausio from Silver Strand, an Aus-tralian-bred mare by Blague, and is trained by B. H. Morris for Mr F. Ormond. Ho has had only one race, the Juvenile Handicap, four furlongs,

at Hastings on October 4, in which he tried to lead all the way, but was beaten by a head by Enthrall in 48 4-ssec. King Herod, in the same race, is by Theio from Lacquer by Lackham; Page’s Raid is by Night Raid from Royal Coat; Alpine is by Captain Bunsby from Spionetta; Royal Writ is by Solicitor General from Princess Doreen, dam o£ Doria; Trapeze is by Ringmaster from Merry Miss by Son-in-Law; Prince Leighon is by Leighon from Leisure: Cataract is by Theio from Gaimint; Juslitia is by Solicitor General from Pucelle; Rata is by Winning Hit from Hororala; Sly Puss is by Lord Quex from Seamstress; Gold Branch is by Guarantee from Privet and Wedding Ring is by Guarantee from an Antagonist mare. Bracketed St. Cloud and Treasurer will be bracketed in the Criterion Handicap to-day. Treasurer is also in the Epsom Handicap, and if reserved will no doubt be in strong demand. Haughty Winner and Parchment are bracketed in the Fendalton Handicap, but the former is also in the Epsom Handicap, and may also be reserved. He is in excellent order just now, and with a track to suit him he will again be dangerous in whichever race he is produced. Not Prominent Pioneer, a starter in the Flemington Stakes on Saturday, is by Paper Money from Mudlark, and is owned by Mr F. C. Christie, formerly of Central Otago and Orari.

TROTTING NOTES

Pot Luck’s Driver The South Canterbury reinsman, P. Gallagher, will drive Pot Luck in the New Zealand Cup to-morrow. The Jack Potts gelding has come through a solid preparation under the care of his owner, Mr H. Stafford, and in company with Bayard and Statuette he worked attractively at Addington yesterday. A Doubtful Starter Ferry Post is under a cloud and is a very doubtful starter in the New Zealand Cup. Last evening his trainer, C. S. Donald, said he was in grave doubt as to whether Ferry Post would be fit to race, but he will give a decision after the gelding works this morning. The stable’s hopes will now centre in last year’s winner, Marlene, who, though suffering from slight soreness. is otherwise in good order. Veteran Trotters Fifa, 16 years old and the dam of horses of racing age. is the veteran trotter nominated at Addington tomorrow, but there are others who have had a Jong experience of racing. Tan John is 15 years, Amonos, Ganton, and Mute are 14 years, Jenny Guy is 11 years, and the 10-year-old division includes Great Mountain, Shadeland, Escalado, Within, Peggotty, Royal Romance, and Lament. Maiden Three-year-olds Barbary Coast, engaged in the Riccarton Stakes, is by Jack Potts —Lou Axworthy, while Bluestock is by Jack Potts —Cushla d’Or, Amongst other maiden three-year-olds in this race are the following: Chuckles, by Quite Sure—Merry Rose; Courtcard, by Jack Potts—Nantwich; Free Bond, by Fremont —Lilian Bond, Great Artist, by Quite Sure —Springtime; Hargood’s Pride, by Jack Potts —Hermes; Honest Peter, by Rey de Oro—Goldworthy; Integrity, by Trevor de Oro—Cheetah; Knapdale Lass, by Gaillard—Rose Logan; Leamington, by Key de Oro— Oxford Queen; Or Course, by Quite Sure—Lady Orange; Opaque, by Sandydale—Black Opal; Safety Pin, by Key. de Oro—Bonny Logan; Safari, by
