Wing Commander and Mrs Humphrey Sevan (Government House, Wellington) arrived in Christchurch on Saturday, and have taken up residence in Mrs Redmond Neill’s house in Idris road for a few months. Toomey, Rhodes street, Fendalton. Miss Helen F. Smith (Waratah, Fairlie) will arrive in Christchurch, on Tuesday to begin training at Karitane Hospital. Miss Janet Deans (Kirkstyle) is the guest of Mrs Denis Chapman. “The Ranche,” West Eyreton, Miss Mary Pearson (Papanui) left on Saturday night for a short visit to Wellington. Mrs Thomas Sime (Dunedin) and Miss Kathleen O'Shea (Wellington) are visitors to Christchurch for Race Week. McCormack, Mrs Jack McCormack, Mrs Dina Stevens are visitors to Christchurch thi. week. Mr and Mrs Sarsfield Flood will arrive from Dunedin to-day. A “bring and buy” sale to raise funds for the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing was organised by members ot the social committee and the executive of the league, and held recently at the club rooms in “The Press Buildings. On Saturday afternoon members of the gardening circle and their friends visited the garden of Mr Cranleigh Barton, Clifton Hill, Sumner. Mrs Elaine Elizabeth Taylor Wilkins. wife of Mr G. T. Wilkins, Hamilton, died recently. She was the eldest daughter of the late Rev. Gideon Smales a pioneer missionary in New Zealand. She was the fifty-seventh registered nurse in New Zealand, and completed her training at St, Maigaret’s Hospital, Melbourne. Mrs Wilkins was well known in the Waikato as matron of the Haeata Private Hospital, which she established in 1917 and maintained for many years. At the Riccarton racecourse after the first race on Saturday, Mrs John Montgomery entertained about 35 guests at a very pleasant luncheon party held informally on the lawn under the trees. Miss Diana Montgomery wore a navy suit with white revers. a cherry-col-oured scarf, and a navy hat with upturned brim, trimmed with navy and cherry ribbons. Among the guests were Misses Judy Sharp and Betty Holmes, of Wairarana. Miss Judy Macfarlane. and Miss Sheila Wilding. Mrs Denis Chapman was hostess on Saturday ni«W at a very pleasant dance given at her home. “The Ranche.” West Eyreton, in honour of her younger daughter. Chapman, who helped in the entertainment of the guests, wore a frock of lemon georgette, and Miss Mary Chapman wore a frock of powder blue net made with fitting bodice and very full skirt.
