NEW TYPE OF DEPTH CHARGE
SUBMARINE VERSION OF AERIAL BOMB
NEW YORK. November 8. A new depth charge with an almost incredible area of blast is being used against U-boats by the Royal Navy, The new charge, which is causing panic among U-boat crews, is the submarine version of the aerial bomb which the Royal Air Force used for the first time last summer.
It is thinly cased, and its blast is reported to make a crash-dive by a submarine useless as a means of escape. A U-boat commander is quoted as Saying that the new charge, instead of being dropped from a ramp, is fired downward by a stem cannon, to prevent the explosion destroying the attacking vessel.
Swedish Volunteers For R.A.F.—The Swedish police at Lulea are reported to have discovered an organisation for recruiting Koyal Air Force volunteers, with "camouflaged” headquarters at Stockholm, and. bureaux throughout Sweden. Three volunteers are stated to have reached England, with 18 about to depart—London, November a.
