'HempStalk, G. Briggs,-R. E.-Cairns, andw, " T, Foster, . , • . .' ■ ’ A proposal for a joint public pound t for the impounding of stock was received from the Christchurch’ City, . Councl. The ' letter stated.!- that .the | proposed site: of the pound was at, ; Sandilands. The council wag asked to : send representatives to a conference to 'be held-at Christchurch,: ; • ? Cr. Lindsay; said he could, not sec ’ how a pound at Sandilands could be of any usl to Lyttelton, On the motion of Cr. Cairns, the meeting decided to reply that the council, eonsidered that the pound would be too far away, and the council would therefore not be represented at the conference. ' ; Cr. Foster reported that 2,250,000 gallons of water a fortnight was .being used on the waterfront and on the lower level of the town, from London street down,

This was an abnormal consumption,, and he thought that a thorough inspection should be made In an endeavour to find where the water was going to, The Mayor said that they were not losing two and a quarter million gallons. That was the water supplied, to the whole of the lower part of, the town and the waterfront. Cr. Briggs suggested that members of the, yacht .club should be asked to refrain, from wasting water when washing down boats. The report was adopted. Water for Gardens Cr. Foster moved that a charge be made for water used by hose for gardens, such charge to be fixed by a subcommittee. He said that the finances of the council were strained anq they were told they had no money. :i The only source of further money, was through the ratepayers. The water account was down by £250 for the last six months. If the charge was put on practically every councillor would have to pay. He contended that ,it would not be a serious burden on . the ratepayers. Cr. Morris, who seconded the motion, said he thought the council had'made a mistake when it removed thfe charge some years ago. .Sprinklers should be permitted—they used less water.;; , “I am surprised.that' Or r Foster; sot la seconder, to that motion,” saidCr. Lindsay, who opposed a charge being made. .. ~ Cr. Young said that the council could not very well make a charge if it might become necessary to restrict further the use of water for ,. The Mayor said Cr. Young had bit the nail on the head when he said that even if the charge were made the council could not guarantee a supply. It might be necessary to step the use of water for gardens altogether. ITie motion was lost, only the mover and seconder voting for it. ,
