MAN FINED IN TIMARU COURT

(F.0.0.R.) TIMARU. November 3. “These offences are too serious ,for the Court to allow probation.” said Mr H. Morgan, S.M., in the ■ Magistrate’s Court at Timaru yesterday, in imposing fines on John Thomas Robb for being intoxicated in charge of a horse and hart,, and for presenting a shotgun at an inspector of the Transport Department.. Robb, a married man, aged 64, of Timaru, for whom Mr M. A. Raymond appeared, pleaded guilty to both charges. The accused was driving a horse and cart south along the main road near the show 'rounds on Saturday, said Sergeant J. Crowley. He was stopped for failing to obey a traffic signal, and was obviously not in a fit state to be in charge of the cart. Inspector WJ, Tait held the reins, while another inspector went for the police. The accused meanwhile picked up a double-barrelled shot-gun and pointed it at Inspector Tait, saying; “Let go the horse’s head or I’ll -—well shoot you.” He took a cartridge from his pocket. When a constable arrived he found 11 cartridges in the accused’s pockets. The gun was not loaded; “The accused’s previous record is not good,” said Sergeant Crowley. .He added that presenting a firearm, whether loaded or unloaded, was a serious offence. _ For the defence, Mr Raymond said the accused was addicted to liquor and most of. his offences were the result of drinking.
