“Art in New Zealand.”—The life and work of the French painter, Renoir, whose one hundredth birthday is celebrated this year, is the subject of an article by Dr. Gerda Eichbaum in the September issue of “Art in New Zealand.” Renoir was the chief exponent of Impressionism, and Dr. Eichbaum says that much of his style is still alive in the Dominion. Six of his paintings illustrate the article. The colour plate for September is the oil painting “Waimangu,” by Alice F. Whyte, of Auckland. which was awarded the-Bledis-doe Medal for the most typical natural New Zealand landscape. Two pages of illustrations are devoted to the Christchurch Sketch Club's recent exhibition, and there is also a photograph of some fine book binding by a Christchurch artist. W. A. Sutton. The book, “Aucassin and Nicolette,” is written on parchment in black and red, and on the leather covered boards are fastened silver plates set with moonstones, white opals, and small turquoise.
