SHOPKEEPER’S STRUGGLE WITH INTRUDER The attack on Mr H. N. Vincent at the back of bis leather goods shop at 62 Manchester street, on Monday even-' ing, is being investigated by the police; but Mr Vincent was unable yesterday, because of his head injuries, to give a very full account of what happened. Mr Vincent, who is 66 years of age, heard footsteps at the back of his shop early in the evening, and went down from his rooms in the upper storey to investigate. He accosted a man in a vacant section next to his shop, and in the struggle which followed Mr Vincent either received a blow on the head or struck his head in falling. He described the intruder as not tall, but powerful. A piece of 2in by Sin timber, about three feet long, was found yesterday morning against the door of an old wooden building at the back of the shop. It was apparently left by the intruder, as it was not there on the previous day. . Mr Vincent was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
