MEMORIAL TO MR SAVAGE

LAND AT BASTION POINT PROVISIONS OF RESERVES BILL (P.R.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 30. The private burial ground and memorial park at Bastion Point, Auckland, for Mr Savage, is established by a clause in the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill, which was introduced in the House to-day, read a first time, and referred to the Lands Committee. The clause proposes the revocation of the reservation of the residue of the land for defence purposes, and stipulates that the area shall be known as the M. J. .Savage memorial, and the Auckland City Council is to control the surrounding area as part of the Orakei Domain. Validation of a payment of £7BO out of the land for settlements account to the Waimairi County Council for an area of land in the Fendalton riding, acquired for housing purposes, is made. Another clause proposes that an area of land at Greymouth, of 11 acres 3 roods 34 perches, be vested in the Harbour Board as a harbour endowment. Validation of the sale by the ■Westport Borough Council of a pleasure ground of more than seven acres to the Nelson Education Board for school purposes is sought, while another clause sets apart a portion of the Westport colliery reserve as a site for a public school, and creates an easement for a pipe line in favour of the Westport Coal Company, Ltd. A proposal in the bill is to vest certain land in the Ross Borough Council for aerodrome purposes. Provision is also made for the cutting of milling timber on lands subject to pastoral licences in the Karamea and Westland mining districts. Authority is also proposed to be given the Timaru Borough Council to sell a portion of a reserve not required and not suitable for municipal buildings, the council having purchased more suitable land.
