CITY BAND CONCERTS

A proposal by the Canterbury Provincial Bands Association that the municipal band concerts this year should be held on Sunday afternoons and evenings is under consideration by the Christchurch City Council. The suggestion is that bands should give concerts on suburban rotundas and reserves in the afternoons and on the city rotunda in the evening, the latter concerts not to begin earlier than 8.15. Cr. R. G. Brown said at the meeting of the council last evening that the bands were having a difficult time, as most of them were playing only for patriotic engagements. They were concerned at the possible effect of the lighting restrictions, but it had been ascertained that the only rotundas affected were those on the sea-fronts. It was suggested that the bands be allowed to take up collections at the concerts. Cr. M. E. Lyons opposed this proposal. The council, he said, engaged the bands and distributed nearly £3OO a year among them. The proposals were referred to the entertainment committee.
