Sir,—One of the first things we want a standard for is the railway fares. Why should the rates in the South Island be so much dearer than those in the North Island? For example, the second class return fare to Masterton from Christchurch, about 146 miles, is 6s lid and half fare 3s 6d. Return second class to Timaru from Christchurch is 17s lid, and half fare 9s, for about 210 miles. We also want a standard in the decisions of the appeals by the Armed Forces Appeal Board. A man who has to close up his business has his appeal dismissed; a casual labourer who follows the occupation of a "chain slaughterman,” who has not worked at his trade for say five months, and will not do so for three more months, and will go on strike without ..any notice, has his appeal granted, or adjourned sine die.—Yours, etc., ANSWER, PLEASE.
