Answer to Correspondent "Wager," Chnstehutvh.—lnformation you require is in race book. New Zealand Cup The publication of the weights for the New Zealand Cup will enliven interest in the forthcoming event. The list of nonttr.Eticn?. although representative cf every racing centre in X’cw Zealand, eouid net be considered as strong as tn many previous years, and this suggest.on is supported by the fact that Mr Russel: epened his scale at Pst with Tauranci. wire was runnerup to Screnata last year, and has not raced since, not a very good recommendation for a Cup top weight. Rakanui follow- Taurangi. and in getting 8-8 he has had to pay for his recent successes in the North Island. He is at present a; Ellers!to awaiting _ the spring meeting there, and there is a chance that he may remain in the north for further racing. Gladyney is well placed with 8-5. His second to Beaultvre in the Caulfield Cup last year indicated his staying ability, and his rerent win at Awapum drew attention to hip- racing condition. The- Bur.zer has proved himself over an extreme tourney, but has been off for some time. Royal Lancer, on last season's handicap form, was entitled to be at the head of the list, but his stock evidently receded since he had to enter the inactive list on account of lameness. He is slut m work, but it is doubtful if he conic, bo got ready for the race. However, something in the nature of a risk has been taken with him tn putting him down at 8-4. Serenata. last year's winner with 7-0. has 8-2 tins year, and if she should be on the scene she would be m keen demand on this mark. Serenata is at present in Sydney. and if she carries on satisfartorilv she is booked to bo ;n Melbourne in November. Wardre-'S appears to be- too close to Royal La'fcer and Serenata, and seems highly enough assessed at 7-13. Iceland Spar is in his right place with 7-11, and indications point to him being one of the early favourites. He ran quite a good race at Geraldine, and a better line will he obtained from his form a; Wingalui next week. Of the remainder. Piastre, a winner at Fox ton. will no doubt attract early followers, and others in Little Robin. Gayest Son, Beau Ciel. Dictate, and Happy Ending have to Vw kept in view. Algerian is on the 7-3 marly and should he return from. Australis, an improbability at the moment, he will come into discussion. On the Minimum Of the 55 handicapped, no fewer than 28 arc on the minimum, and although many of these are certain to drop out this‘week, there will still bo a good number booked (n carry on their engagements. Of this division the most likely would appear to be Airline, Islay Downs, and Parchment. Summing Up The first payment on Friday will give a better idea of the probable programmes of many of the most important candidates, but in the meantime the prospects of Gladynev, Iceland Spar, Gayest Son. Pihslre. Dictate, and Parchment appear to bo the most favourable. An Interesting Arrival The brood mare Joyous, owned by Messrs J. W. and L. W. Slurry, of Christchurch, has produced a filly foal to Golden Sovereign, who died suddenly at the Grange stud. Wanganui, shortly after his arrival from England. Joyous and Lady Zephyr have been sent by Messrs Storry to Battle Song this season. Sale of Sire Man's Pal. sire of Palfrey and Good Scout, has been purchased outright by Messrs Timpany brothers, of Southland. who have held him on lease for the last two seasons. An Australian breeder was keen to purchase the son of Manna, but the lessees had the first refusal, and exorcised their right last week. Stonyhurst Mares Wild Hind, dam of Wild Chase and Babel iriam of Wild Talk), owned by the estate of Sir Charles Clifford, will bo mated this season with Solicitor General.

The New Zealand Derby j After the second payment for )hc ! Now Zealand Derby, IS horses remain: eligible, and though several that have, shown good form are not engaged, the decisive defeat of the early favourite.) Pacing Power, by Great News at Wei- ( ling',on has ore,nod a fresh interest in | the three-voar-old classic. Many good; judges consider that Paring Power was. not so forward as ho might have boon, i but Now Brighton followers of Groat Nows are quite oonfidont that ho will prove the hot in- coll in iho remaining classics. At the Geraldine meeting last week two other three-year-olds in Sandiways and Knapdalo Ltss showed ili.it they had come through Ihe winter in good order, and from now on they may be expected to make improvement. Sanmways was always in (he picture on Saturday, and lie may prove the hotter of R. B. Berry's stable. Warform has been backed more than once, and has not nm up to expectations, but. the little racing that Scottish Air has done has left an impression that she is above the average. She is bred for speed, for she is by U. Seotl from Airflow, two tine performers a few j years ago. Scottish Air will ho onej of the First horses to be produced at! a race meeting by the Australian 1 trainer. G. B. Noble. Mr R. E. Hall's chestnut filly. Amarita, is by Jack Potts from Daisy Audubon, and is a likely improver, while others include Integrity, by Trevor dp Oro—Cheetah, owned and (rained by V. Looming, and Safety Pin, by Roy dc Oro—Bonny Logan. Novleo Parers Several young pacers were produced each day at the Geraldine meeting, including Free Voyage, a three-year-old by a Man o' War colt—Happy Voyage mare, trained by R. W. Townley, and Prosecution, a four-year-old gelding by Rey de Oro—Bonny Logan, trained by F. G, Holmes. In America Saratoga, an unbeaten two-year-old in America in l!) J b. has earned on his winning record this. year. Saratoga last season raced in company with Time's Scarce and established a two-yoar-oid record for double harness of Umin fi 3-ftsee, a phenomenal performance for juveniles. RACE INQUIRIES admission of press SI'GGKSTKD Mr J. Connolly at Hie annual mooting of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association said iherc was a general feeling that all inquiries at meetings should be open to the newspaper reporters. Mr Connolly said ho was taking a risk in opening the question whether inquiries should be open to (he press. Ho thought that open inquiry was the surest guarantee that the public would see that, everything was square and above board. There was an impression that penalties imposed wore not always in accordance with charges alleged against drivers. In every walk of life the press was the one medium to the public that would allay (heir fears. The admission of the press would ensure a general formality in the imposition of penalties. The publication of evidence was an advantage. The secrecy in many cases was not fair to the man charged, to the club concerned, or the public. He hoped that, members would give the matter earnest consideration. He was wholeheartedly with the public and only (ho press rould give the public a justified confidence. Mr E. L. Husband strongly supported the remarks of Mr Connolly, but thought that (lie association might become unpopular with clubs. On Ihe suggestion of the president (Mr Fox) it was derided to refer (he question to (he Dominion Trotting Council which would be formed in tlu near future.
