Mr J. J. B. Connor, Christchurch district officer of the Transport Department, will return to-night from a four-days’, visit to the West Coast on department business. Mr D. I. Macdonald, secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, left for the north last night after spending the day in Christchurch. ‘News of the promotion pf Cr. T. Milliken, who is on active Service in Egypt, was given to members pf the Christchurch City Council at the meeting of the council last evening.. The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) said that Cf. Milliken, who had been serving as a captain, had been given the substantive rank of major, the rank Cr. Milliken had held in New Zealand. Mr Andrews said that Cr. Milliken had received the cablegram sent to him by the council re-

cently and had written to Mrs Milliken stating his thanks and appreciation. He was writing direct to the council. The parcels for Cr. Milliken, for which councillors had subscribed, had been sent forward. Mr R. McPherson, Wheat and Flour Controller, left for Wellington last evening. He will return to Christchurch on Friday. Mr T. Clark, supervisor of the mailroom at the Wanganui Chief Post Office, has retired after 40 years’ service. Wing Commander Patrick Geraint Jameson, DFC., R.A.F., has been awarded a bar to his Distinguished Flying Cross, according to official advice received by Air Headquarters, Wellington. Wing Commander Jameson, who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in July, 194p, for distinguished .vork ip the Narvik; area, was born in Wellington in 1912. Before his acceptance in 1935 for a short service commission in the Royal Air Force he secured his A licence as a member of the Wellington Aero Club. He was educated at the Hutt Valley High School and is a keen sportsman. His father is Mr R. D. Jameson, of Lower Hutt.
