AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL

LOSS OF RATE SUBSIDY The Akaroa County Council has been advised by the Valuation Department that subsidy on rates this year amounts to £6OO odd. The department has advised the council that as the Pigeon Bay Road Board was in existence the full subsidy of 5s in the £ oy er the total rate collected could not be paid, and the clauses of the act controlling the payment of subsidy on rates was qU Thefcounty chairman, Mr E. Hay, reported that he had interviewed Sir Bruce Stewart, chairman of the Pigeon Bay Road Board, and pointed out that because of the existence of the road board in the county s district the loss in rate subsidy was approximately £I9OO this year. Sir Bruce Stewart and other ratepayers in the road board district agreed that it would be wise for the Pigeon Bay Road Board to amalgamate with the county. The chairman welcomed Cr. D. i-.. Mora to his seat on the council as representative of the Le Bon s Bay riding in place of Mr O. A. Thelning, who resigned. It was decided that the chairman represent the county at the conference of local body and other representatives to be held in Christchurch on October 1 to consider precautions to be taken to prevent fires in county districts during the summer. The conference is being arranged by the Canterbury Progress League.
