FLOGGING
Sir, —I think H. J. Battle's remarks about flogging are superficial. To say that capital punishment and flogging are not deterrents is absurd. It has been proved in America frequently by criminals themselves admitting that they always chose those states without capital punishment and flogging to pursue their crimes. Anyhow, the biggest object lesson the world could ever have in regard to the treatment necessary for the aggressive bully is shown by what happens with unchecked Nazi brutality and viciousness. Would H. J. Buttle make a plea for the gentle treatment of Hitler, Himmler, and all the other were-woll Nazis? If he or she “turned the other cheek’’ to that type, it would just be encouraging crime, and so helping to take the world back to barbarism. —Yours, etc., REALITY. September 23, 1941.
