SIR HARRY BATTERBEE’S ADDRESS

Sir.—The address of Sir Harry Batte'rbee in this morning’s papers is admirable. Sir Harry is brave enough to say to the Christchurch Rotary Club that Hitler, 12 months ago, failed to strike at Britain when he had his one hope of success, and to add, “Thank God!” Good! And he thinks it possible that “Providence may have other surprises in store for us” —of which this writer has not the smallest doubt. But His Majesty the King calls us together from time to time for days of prayer, and that is all to the good. But closing our eyes while somebody speaks for us, while we, as a Dominion, go on liquortrafficking, gambling, and horse-racing, and raking in hundreds of thousands of pounds from the wages of iniquity, what is it all but masses of hypocrisy? What is it all but an insult to Almighty God? Let us put away our public sins and then we may look for help from Above. —Yours, etc.. JAMES AITKEN. Wanganui, September 24, 1941.
