CURRENT NOTES

Mrs H. S. S. Kyle (Riccarton) is paying a visit to Wellington. Mr and Mrs John Bond (Manila, Philippine Islands), with their small daughter, have arrived in New Zealand on furlough. Mrs Bond was formerly Miss Alison Rowley. Miss Catherine Smith, well known in Blenheim as Sister Catherine, died at the Wairau Hospital last week. The daughter of a former inspector of schools, Sister Catherine did much usefitl work amongst women and children. There was a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Women’s Kennel Club, held in Ballantynes private room. The hostess was Mrs T. V. Cooke, and Mrs A. M. Spence-Clark won a competition. Mr W. D. M, Clarke, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner at Bombay, who has been on official leave in' New Zealand, will shortly return to India by air. Before their departure, Mr and Mrs Clarke are visiting Wellington, Tauranga, and Auckland, after which Mrs Clarke Will return to Christchurch. Thirteen debutantes, all daughters of returned soldiers, were presented to the Mayor and Mayoress of Devonport, Mr and Mrs R. G. May, at the annual ball of the Devonport Returned Soldiers’ Club, held last week. The guests were received by the president of the club, Mr E, T. O’Sullivan, and Mrs O’Sullivan. The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges receipt of two woollen singlets and a black marocain coat for the New Zealand Lady Galway Guild, from an anonymous friend, and a donation of 16s for men on minesweepers from the Monday Bridge Circle. Miss P. Blakemore, whose marriage will take place soon, was guest of honour at a gift party held in the Springston Hall recently. Music for dancing was played by Mrs C. H. Fletcher, Miss M. Riordan, and Mr L. Stace. Items were given by Miss A, Riordan (songs) and Messrs R. and H. Hoskin (songs), Miss B. Wall and Mr C. Mills (recitations), Masters A. Rolston and G. Wall (harmonica solos), Miss Joyce Fletcher and Master Neville Fletcher (vocal duets). Competitions were won by Miss H. Garland. Messrs G. Everest, E. Hoskin. and Master lan Hoskin. Mrs Weld presided at the meeting of the Sunshine Club, held at Springston. Gifts were presented to Miss P. Blakemore, whose marriage will lake place soon. Competitions were won by Misses M. Blakemore, M. Riordan, J. Ridden, and A. Tyson. Results of the monthly competitions were as fiallows:—Senior: Vase of daffodils, Miss R. Stace 1, Miss M. Mounce 2; intermediate, worked apron, Miss P. Wall 1, Miss A. Tyson 2; junior, plate of scones, Miss M. Garland 1, Miss P. Wall 2. Miss S. Everest 3. After having completed more than 30 years’ service with the Post and Telegraph Department, Miss B. J. Johnson will retire to-morrow from the position of supervisor of the automatic telephone exchange in Dunedin. Miss Johnson has been an exchange attendant at’ Masterton, Napier, Auckland, and Dunedin, and also a toll operator at Dunedin. Later she became supervisor fit Gore, New Plymouth, and Timaru. She is the daughter of Mrs A. Johnson, of Dunedin, and of the late Mr J. Johnson, formerly a well-known surgical appliance manufacturer, and a member of the Dunedin Bowling Club. By the will of Captain C. C. Plunket, marine surveyor, of Remuera, Auckland, who died last month, generous bequests have been made chiefly on behalf of children. After payment ot some legacies and subject to his widow’s life interest in the whole estate, Captain Plunket left the residue to the Catholic Bishop of Auckland, upon trust for three purposes: the establishment and maintenance of a bed to the value of £2500, for poor children of all religious denominations in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Auckland: the founding of the James and Catherine Plunket Scholarship for the education of poor Catholic boys born in New Zealand, and the founding of a fund for the education of New Zealand-born boys for the priesthood in the diocese of Auckland. A legacy of £ipo is left to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Auckland. The monthly meeting of the Home Economics Association was held at the Gas Company demonstration room, when Miss E. Aiken gave a talk on, invalid cookery and demonstraled breakfast and luncheon dishes. Miss Jean Bell also spoke on invalid diet. Miss S McKee presided and announced that a flower show would be held at the next meeting. The monthly meeting of the Papanui Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in St. Giles’ schoolroom. Mrs Thornton presiding. Devotions were conducted by Mrs Elliott and a temperance fact was given by Mrs Tillman. Arrangements were made for the annual cradle roll meetings to be held next month.
