RACING AND TROTTING

GERALDINE R.C. HANDICAP WON BY STABILISE The Geraldine Racing Club’s annual race meeting was concluded on the Orari racecourse on Saturday, and there was an exceptionally large attendance. The weather was fine for the first half of the programme, but a thunderstorm, accompanied by hail, then passed over the course, and the investments on the sixth and seventh races were seriously affected. Notwithstanding, the turnover for the day was £16,917 10s, against £16,048 10s on the corresponding day last year. The total for the two days was £31,344 10s, as compared with £27,896 last year, an Increase of £3448. NOTES ON THE RACING Flame Queen Makes Good The Second Hurdles was a most unfortunate event. Fcrriby fell at the (list fence and Gay Boa fell over him. and when the field had gone half the Journey Flame Queen ran to the front from Potent Roddy, Panara, and Kifight Commander. Panara fell five furlongs from home and seriously checked Recollection, who was moving up fast at the time. Flame Queen led into the straight from Roddy and Knight Commander, and all went to the last fence almost in line. Flame Queen, under the whip, was first over, but Knight Commander ran inwards and fell over the course rail. Roddy threw out a challenge to Flame Queen, but the latter was not troubled to win comfortably. Recollection gave this pair several lengths' break from the last fence but finished with a burst to be only a length away from Roddy at the finish. Eallyaggan was 10 lengths back.

Successful Debut Lord Dundas was sent out a good favourite for the Wainui Handicap and put up another solid race, but suffered defeat by the moderately supported Bali, who was having his first race. Ball and Kernel were the first to show out and they entered the straight together two lengths in front of Lord Dundas, Miss Nottava, Wandella, Miss Rapald, and Lunarin. Ball was clear a furlong from home, and although Lord Dundas reduced his gap in the run home he failed by a head to get up. Kernel was a close third, a head in front of Lunaria, who finished very fast wide out. Lady Nottava and Miss Rapaki were close up next. Stabilise Stays On The President’s Handicap was won In an attractive manner by the second win favourite, Stabilise, who outclassed his opponents over the last furlong. Don't Forget, Stabilise, and Cymric raced abreast for the first furlong and then Don't Forget and Gay Parade carried on in front from Cymric, St. Cloud, Cherokee, and Dictate, with Iceland Spar. Wagner, and Last Refrain bringing up the rear. There was not much change in the leading division turning into the straight, but as soon as the run home was commenced Stabilise drew past Don't Forget and was never seriously called upon. Don't Forgot looked likely to gain second place until his stable-mate Prudent Prince appeared with a late run, and the latter got up to gain a head verdict. Cherokee was three lengths away in front of Cymric, Iceland Spar, and Dictate together. Domnin Trot Rainstorm again set the pace in the Domain Trot, and had a useful lead entering the straight from Bright Lass, Canister, and Swagger Jack. Rainstorm was in trouble half a furlong from home and Swagger Jack drew past him to record his first .win after several minor placings. Canister finished on well into second place, while Free Bond got up to beat Rainstorm for third money. Bright Lass and Knapdale Lass were next. Calypso’s Surprise In the Gladstone Hack Handicap the favourite division was beaten. Military Maid and Force began smartly and led to the straight entrance from Atreus, Jolly Time. Grey Night. Calypso, and Gold Don. Military Maid could not carry on In the straight and Force showed out for a while, but Grey Night and then Good Scout and Calypso moved up. and in the best finish of the meeting Calypso got up in the last stride to win from Good Scout, with Grey Night half a length away a neck In front of Force, Military Maid, and Atreus together, and Jolly Time and Hurry Girl together were next. An Overdue Win There were only seven starters in the Stewards' Stakes, and Strip was sent out a better favourite than Sham Boy and his stable-mate Boloyna. Strip and Sham Boy were the smartest out, but the latter soon ran to the front and led round the top and into the straight from Strip. King’s Toast, and Craiglea. Sham Boy was never in danger in the run home to .win from Strip, with King’s Toast holding on for third place from Craiglea. Boloyna was well back next. Another Impressive Effort Countless repeated his first day’s performance of easily winning the Winchester Trot. Bedrock and Lunch Hour piloted the field to the home turn, where the latter broke, and Colleen Travis ran past Bedrock to lead into the straight from Bedrock, Sandiways, Countless, and Hamarfast. Sandiways was on terms witli Colleen Travis half a furlong from home, but Countless then put in his claim and won going away from Sandiways, who, although breaking nearing the post, hold on to beat Colleen Travis. Hamarfast was some 12 lengths back. Always in Front Parchment was sent out a short-priced favourite for tire South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, but although making another powerful finishing run he had to submit to a narrow defeat by Ackemina, who with a 71b allowance was practically in front all the way. Ackemma led through the back stretch from Foxclte and Bright Form together, with Milton Abbas, Blue Abbey, Myraid, and Parchment nil handy. Ackemma had a clear advantage entering the straight from Rousseau, Bright Form, and Parchment. The last-named threw out a determined challenge and at one stage looked likely to go on for another win, but Ackemma held on tenaciously and secured a head victory. Bright Form was a good third, three lengths in front of Myraid, with Royoney, Rousseau, and Valcron next. METHVEN TROTS. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1041. TROTTING NOTES

Methven T.C. Acceptances for the Methven meeting will close to-day at 5 p.m. —6 Consistency Rewarded Swagger Jack’s win at Geraldine on Saturday was a just reward for the consistency shown by the gelding and the perseverance of his trainer, R. W. Townley, jun. Last season Swagger Jack started 17 times, and without winning a race he was in second place five times, third twice, and fourth on five occasions. In his three starts this year he nas won once and at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting he was third. At Methven Swagger Jack is engaged in the Westward Ho Handicap, but a penalty of 36 yards makes his chance more difficult. A Successful Driver The Methven driver, G. McKendry, contested four races at the Geraldine meeting for the good record of two wins with Countless and two seconds with Canister, Countless, who is five years old, started only once last season, when he won the Lyndhurst Handicap at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting. In his three starts this season he has won twice. By Jack Potts from Purple Patch, Countless is a pacer above the average. Apparently the connexions anticipated some success at Geraldine, for previous to the meeting Countless was nominated for the Avonmore Handicap at Methven, in which he was giving away several seconds. Classic Race Deleted At the October meeting last year the New Brighton Trotting Challenge Stakes provided a good race, and resulted in a win for Peter’s Find, who

defeated Surprise Potts and Shadow Maid, who filled the minor places, and others including Walter Moore, Festivity and Diamond Jim. At the meeting to be decided next month the classic has been replaced by the Travis Handicap, a mile and a half race, for horses that can do 3min 28sec or better. By Waipahi Helen Lewis, a winner at the Otago Hunt meeting at Wingatui, is by Waipahi, who has won a number of races for A. Henderson. Waipahi is by Prince Pointer from Olga Russell. Helen Lewis is out of an El Carbine mare. Dam of Champion Estella Amos, the dam of Indianapolis, is to be mated with Raider, Imin 59isec this season. Estella Amos is represented by a three-year-old brother to Indianapolis in Victoria. This colt has already been a winner at a matinee meeting. Special Force Special Force, who won the New Zealand Sapling Stakes in 1940 and commenced last season by winning three races, lost all form and f a ued to win in his next three starts. The loss of form is regarded as only temporary, and the good spell he has had should put him in order for a preparation he will commence shortly. When in form, Special Force is a high-grade pacer, and the policy of patience adopted by his trainer, P. P. Gallagher, may bring its own reward. Rehandicaps Winners at Geraldine - have been penalised for the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. In the Westward Ho Handicap, Loyal King, penalised 48 yards, and Swagger Jack 36 yards, are now on 48 yards behind, and in the Avonmore Handicap, Countless, who won two races at Geraldine and was giving away time to be in the Avonmore Handicap at Methven, goes back a further 24 yards. In the Mount Harding Handicap, Countless has been penalised 60 yards. Related to Dark Hazard La Fonda, who raced at Geraldine, is by Key de Oro—Wild Nita, and, trained by M. C. McTigue, is a halfsister to Dark Hazard. Hambletonian Stake The American Hambletonian Stake, this year worth 38,729 dollars, was won by Bill Gallon, a brown colt by Sandy Flash—Calumet Aristocrat, by Belwin. Bill Gallon’s best winning heat was done in 2min ssec. The Hambletonian is the greatest trotting race in the world, and is for three-year-old trotters.
