DOCTORS’ BILL AND LODGES
FRIENDLY SOCIETY’S CRITICISM (P.A.) DUNEDIN, September 28. the doctors’ bill becomes law it will cut the sinews of life of the friendly societies, and they will bleed to death.” said Mr P. W. Stabb at the half-yearly meeting of the Otago district committee of the M.U., 1.0.0. F. on Saturday. He presented the following motion, which was carried practically unanimcusly by the 86 members present; "This meeting views with concern the effect on friendly societies of the Social Security Amendment Bill. It would appear that under its provisions, lodge contracts with medical officers would be cancelled automatically, thus depriving members of the services of lodge doctors from whose profession our society has had eminently satisfactory and efficient service since the inception of the district in 1848.” In discussion on the motion, it was made clear that the meeting entirely dissociated itself from the political implications of the controversy.
