Sir R. Heaton Rhodes has been reappointed patron of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). At the association’s annual meeting on Saturday evening the re-election of Mr C. G. Curtis as president was announced, and the election of Mr G. Tench aS vice-president, and Mr G. Hamilton as a new member of the council. Dr. W. Arundel Orchard, examiner for Trinity College of Music, London, who has been ill for the last few weeks, has resumed work, and will continue examining until he leaves next month for Australia. Mr Andersen Tyrer will shortly arrive in New Zealand, and, with Dr. Lyon, will complete the examinations in the North Island. Mr W. J. Gardner, who has been managing secretary of the Wanganui Harbour Board for the last 15 years, has arrived in Wellington to take up the position of secretary to the New Zealand Harbour Boards Association, and secretary to the New Zealand Harbour Boards Employers’ Union. Mr E. Caradus, senior inspector of secondary schools and director of educational services for the R.N.Z.A.F., has returned to Wellington from the South Island. Major F. H. Mintrom, M.C., M.M., of the Ist Canterbury Regiment, left on Friday for the District School of Instruction at Trentham for a special course of training. Lieutenant R. A. Young and Second-Lieuten-ant L. D. White, officers of the Ist Canterbury Regiment, left on Saturday for the District School of Instruction at Burnham. They are to attend special courses of training. Constable C. J. Dwyer, for the last 12 years a member of the Lower Hutt Police Force, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant and will take up his new duties in Christchurch this week. Captain A. H. Richards, N.Z.T.S., has been appointed to the staff of Military District Headquarters as liaison officer of the Home Guard. Captain Richards was appointed to the 2nd Canterbury Battalion on its formation, and later was transferred to the New Zealand Temporary Staff. He is at present engaged in training duties at Burnham mobilisation camp. Sea Elephant Seen A sea elephant, about 12 feet long, was seen at Allday Bay (North Otago) last week.
