Egyptian Rose, Jolly Time, Midguard, Ann Mie, Great Swoop, Sir Gundi, Lord Midas, Gold Don, Boloyna, Craiglea, Foxette, and Loandcr. Wholesale Withdrawal Roy Bun, The Flying Fortress, Skyrena, Philibun. and Avenal were withdrawn from to-day’s programme at Orari before the weights appeared, owing, it is understood, to their trainer, M. Conza, being dissatisfied with the starting of the races on Thursday, in which Roy Bun and Skyrena got away badly. A High-class Horseman T. Green had a winning mount at Te Aroha. At one time he was in the front rank, and won the Auckland Cup on Rapier, Royal Stakes on Agrion, Prince Humphrey, Honour, and Greenaway, New Zealand Derby on Agrion and Honour, New Zealand St. Leger on Satrap and Peter Jackson, Taranaki Cup on Piuthair, Yoma, and Vertigern, Takapuna Cup on Eden Hall, and other important races. Under Suspicion L. B. Mayer, owner of Beau Pere and several Australian-bred mares, was one of the nine owners who, in July, wore questioned by the California Racing Board in connexion with the alleged stimulation of their horses with caffeine at the Hollywood Park meeting, As the test did not show that Mayer’s horse was stimulated with caffeine or anything else, he was exonerated. Mayer, however, was so upset by the charge that it was reported he might go out of racing, but his engagement pf.a trainer for three years disposed of that rumour. America’s Champion Beaten The three-year-old Whirlaway. regarded as the “wonder horse" of America this season, was sent out 4 to 1 on in a field of six for the classic at Arlington Park (Chicago) on July 26. and was- comfortably beaten by Attention in 2min 2 4-ssec for the mile and a quarter. Whirlaway was within half a neck of Attention entering the straight, but was a length and a half behind at the winning post. Attention, who received 51b, is by the great racehorse Equipoise, who died nearly three years ago. Confounded Critics The success of Attention was specially gratifying to “Salvator,” probably America’s soundest writer on breeding. When Equipoise was retired “Salvator” upheld his stud possibilities, notwithstanding that many of the Figure System authorities contended that it was against Equipoise that he was a No. s—in fact, he was practically certain to be a failure because ox that. However, there are upsets in everything associated with racing and breeding, and Equipoise was a success. Many of his two-year-olds havp won, he has a crack threc-year-old m Attention. and, a few days before the latter beat Whirlaway Equipoise’s four-year-old son Equifox won the Arlington Handicap and the Equipoise Mile named in honour of that horse. The Arlington Classic carried approximately £13,400. and a gold trophy for first. Though the field was small, £37,270 went through the totalisator on the race.
