EASTERN FRONT LONDON, September 26. The latest communique s'atos that the forces defending Leningrad have beaten off Gorman attacks from three directions. Toward Murmansk the Gormans have made no progress. A German communique claims that nearly 500.000 prisoners ■ have been taken in the Kiev rocket. Tins claim is denied , from Moscow, which states that tierce fighting is still going on on the Kiev front. On one sector of the front Russian fighters have been operating with British fighters. Twenty-six enemy machines were brought down in dog-fights for the loss of one Russian and one British fighter, BATTLE OF ATLANTIC * LONDON, September 26, i A new development in the Rattle of tl'a' Atlantic is reported | in a message from New York, which states (hat lighter aeroplanes arc being catapulted from the decks of British merchantmen between Iceland and Britain as defence against attacks on convoys. After the fighting some of the machines attempt to reach (he nearest land base, but those that are short of petrol come down near the convoy and the crew take to a rubber boat. This story has not been confirmed in London.
