FRIDAY (Before Mr E. C, Levvey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS For c’runkenness, his second offence in six months, Angus McLean, a labourer and seaman, aged 59, was fined 20s, with costs. CHARGES ADJOURNED Charges against a registered alien, Albert Gcisslcr, a land agent, of absenting himself from his abode for more than 24 hours and of travelling more than 20 miles from his residence without the permission of the authorities, were adjourned, his counsel, Mr W. R, Lascclles, staling that there was now an application before the Aliens Appeals Board on his behalf. If this application, which was based on the ground that the recommendation and the order were not justified by the birth and character of the defendant, was sustained, there would be nothing on which to base the present charges, said counsel. Senior-Sergeant J. Bickerdike objected that the defendant had been declared an alien and had certain obligations. He had failed to carry them out. The Magistrate said he did not wish to prejudge the case, and he would accept counsel’s assurance that the defendant would observe the requirements of the regulations until the appeal was settled. CHIMNEY FIRE For allowing a chimney on her premises to catch fire, Mabel Tranter (Mr J. K. Moloney) was ordered to pay costs. LIQUOR NEAR DANCE HALL For having liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall. Leslie Archibald was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. CAST OFFENSIVE MATTER Michael Donovan, for casting offensive matter in a public place, was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs. DANGEROUS DOG For having a dangerous dog in his possession, Frank Mcllroy was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. Defendant told the Magistrate that he still owned the dog. but had had no trouble with it before. It was now kept tied up. FIRE IN OPEN Rose Alice Parks, on a charge of lighting a fire in the open without first obtaining the permission of the proper authorities, was ordered to pay costs only. (Before Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M.) LICENSING BREACHES • Vincent Stuart Goulding (Mr H. O. Jacobsen), the licensee of the Shades Hotel, for selling liquor after hours, was fined 20s. For exposing liquor for sale and for opening for sale after hours he was fined 10s or, each charge. Cecil Rapley, the barman, for supplying the liquor, was fined £2. Senior-Sergeant J. Bickerdike, for the police, said that when the hotel was visited by a sergeant and a constable on August 29, at 9.30 p.m„ they found that several men, as well as a number of lodgers, were, diinking in the private bar. Goulding was in the bar in his shirt-sleeves. Mr Jacobsen said that on the night of the police raid Goulding had retired early, giving definite instructions to his barman that no one. with the exception of lodgers, was to be served with liquor. The hotel had been almost booked out. and the barman had made a mistake in admitting to the hotel persons who he thought were lodgers. Goulding, in evidence, said that he definitely had not been in the bar when the police arrived. If the police said that they were making a mistake. The Magistrate, in imposing the fines, said there had been a certain amount of laxity, but the offence was not a serious one. For being on the premises after hours, Thomas James Cox. John Francis Cronin, and Joseph Herbert Forbes were each fined 20s and ordered to pay costs, CIVIL COURT (Before Mr A. A. McLachlan. S.M.) JUDGMENT FOR PLAINTIFF B. K. Herrick (Mr E. S. Bowie), a waterside worker, was awarded £23 and costs as compensation for Injuries received in an accident to a hand on June 11. The defendants, represented by Mr J. H. Upham, were the owners 1 of the ship the Brisbane Star, in whose employ Herrick was working at the time of the accident.
