WEDDING

NEWBOROUGH—SMITH At St. Mark’s Church, Rakaia, the wedding was celebrated recently of Olive, youngest daughter of Mrs Smith and the late Mr H. Smith, Rakaia, to William Brierley Newborough, youngest son of Mr and the late Mrs Newborough, Staffordshire, England. Friends of the bride dec'orated the church attractively with mixed spring flowers and freesias. The bride, who was escorted by her eldest brother, Mr H. Smith, Morven, wore a gown of cream satin made bn fitting lines, which opened to fullness in the skirt, forming a long train. Her cream Brussels net veil was arranged from a spray of camellias. The bride was attended by three nieces, Misses Lorraine Hardie and Veronica Smith (Christchurch), and Judith Robinson (Chertsey). Miss Hardie wore a very full frock of pale lemon embossed organdi, and carried a bouquet of lemon spring flowers. Miss Smith wore a similar frock of pale green, with a bouquet to tone. Judith Robinson wore a frock of pale mauve embossed organdi, and carried a Victorian posy of mauve flowers The bridesmaids wore big picture hats to tone with their frocks. Sergeant Norman Hardie, nephew of the bride was best man. During the signing of the register, Mrs Bryant sang a solo. When she received her guests at the Rakaia Town Hall, Mrs Smith wore a tailored suit, grey fur, and small black hat. Her spray was of red roses. For travelling! Mrs W. B. Newborough wore- -a • smart petrel blue pleated frock, with a slouch hat to tone, and brown fur coat. PATRIOTIC BALL Invitation cards issued in the shape of a flat football were accepted by a large crowd of dancers to attend the patriotic ball organised by .members of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union, and held at the Winter Garden. Harold Bailey’s orchestra played the .dance music. A poster of Lancaster Park, and club shields and banners decorated the ballroom, while club colours were prominent in_ the alcoves. Guests of honour were the Mayor, Mr E. H. Andrews, and the Mayoress, Miss E. Couzins, the Town Clerk, Mr H. S. Feast, and Mrs Feast. Members of the organising committee were Messrs E. V. Phillips (chairman), J. N. Clarke, R, R. Masters, V. Jensen, M. Gundersen, E. M. Todd, and E. G. Mitchell (secretary). ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Winifred Mary, only daughter of the late Dr.' and Mrs W. H. D. McKee, of Cheviot, and Leading Aircraftsmen David Geoffrey Conly, R.N.Z.A.F., elder son of Mr and Mrs T. Conly, of Dunedin. MILLINERY NEWS AN IMPORTANT CHANGE Negotiations have now been completed for the transfer of the business of Hanna & Gee-Ltd. to Beath & Co. Ltd., and from Wednesday week, October 8, Miss Blanche Hanna and her competent staff of milliners will be in attendance at Beath’s. In view of this transfer, clients of Hanna & Gee Ltd. who have millinery on order or lay-by, are asked to complete their purchases and take •delivery before Saturday, October 4. —0
