CURRENT NOTES

Miss Betty Howard (Oxford), whose marriage will take place soon, is the guest of Miss Gwen Drayton, St. Albans. Mr and Mrs Caesar Otway, formerly of Invercargill, left for the north last night for a holiday at Cambridge, before returning to take up residence in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs F. R. Dudley, Roa road, Fendalton, have been advised by cablegram that their daughter, Natalie, has been transfered from Admiralty House, Portsmouth, where she has been doing administrative, work, to the Royal Naval College,' Greenwich. Mrs George Laurence (Hawera) is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs W. R. Carey, Cashmere Hills. Members of the St. Martins-Opawa Garden Club met at the home of Miss D. Harman, Hawford road, for their September meeting, when Mr W. S. Young gave a talk on growing bulbs and tulips. Three new members .were welcomed and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. A successful spring flower show was held by members of St. Cuthbert’s Guild, Governor’s Bay. Mrs Evans declared the show open, and presented the prizes. Winners of the competitions were as follows:—Cut flowers: Mrs L. Brown; decorative work, Miss Allen: domestic section, Mrs Greig: needlework, Mrs Bishop; knitting. Miss D, Irwin, formerly of Timaru, now of Palmerston North, has been appointed assistant welfare officer to the Manawatu branch of the Crippled Children Society,-the position from which Miss Margaret Poole resigned recently. Miss Irwin has had experience in massage work and was formerly in dharge of the plaster depart-ment-of the Dunedin Public Hospital. The lady editor of "The Press!’ gratefully acknowledges receipt of three large knitted scarves and three large tins of cocoa, for men on minesweepers, from an anonymous friend, a black skirt and cardigan for the Lady Galway Guild, from an anonymous friend, and eight pairs of khaki mittens and a scarf, also from an anonymous friend. Miss I. F. Milnes presided at the Christchurch branch of the Federation of University Women held at the clubrooms in Montreal street. Miss Baker gave a talk on the formation of a post-war reconstruction study group, and Miss Hursthouse gave a talk on democracy.
