TROTTING NOTES

An Unpopular Distance Mile and a half rades at Addington are becoming more and more unpopular with owners and trainers, and it would be for the benefit of all c6ncerned if these races were deleted from future programmes. The start of a race of this distance is too near the turn out of the straight to give every horse a chance. A race over a mile and five furlongs gives all starters a clear run for at least a furlong by which time they are properly balanced and prepared to race. This is plainly the case with trotters who do not nip into their stride as quickly as pacers and take some time to become balanced. It would satisfy most owners and trainers if mile and five furlong races were substituted for the 12 furlong events that occasionally are run at Addington. The Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association has for some time strongly supported the introduction of mile and five furlong races at Addington. A Methven Team

Fine Art was M. C; McTigue’s only winner at the meeting, and though Great Divide earned only minor place money Black Surprise finished fourth twice. On the concluding day she paced a fine race but found three just too good for her. Black Surprise is a good reliable mare though not overgifted with brilliance.

Disappointing Allie Audubon let her backers down rather badly in her starts at the meeting, and thoftgh in each race she showed extreme speed, breaking cost her a good deal of ground. She is better than this form suggests and she will do better before many meetings are past. Promising

Discord, at one time looked on as one of the most promising trotters in commission, gave two good displays at the meeting and but for a break in the early stages of the Midwinter Handicap on Saturday, he may have taken a hand in the finish. He finished fourth, his second, in this position for the meeting. Consistency Twice at the meeting W. J. Doyle’s mare Within had to take second place to the crack trotter, Certissimus, and she appeared to have a royal chance in the Midwinter Handicap on Saturday. In this race she met two greatly improved trotters in Shadeland, who had been disqualified for galloping on the first day, and Vain Lad, who had changed hands during the week. Within is as solid as they are made and will win races in the near future. With his two trotters, Within and Lament, W. J. Doyle secured five minor placings, a record of consistency, if not a profitable one from a backer’s point of view.

TURF GOSSIP

Coining Into Favour The success which attended the susSension on the second day of the rand National meeting in the longestablished rule of horses being paraded and given a preliminary before the start of a race, and then called upon to spend a long time at the starting post, is likely to result in many of the clubs seriously considering' the idea. It is more than probable that the Wellington Racing Club will try the experiment at its spring meeting and should it be as successful as at Riccarton, the Canterbury Jockey Club will no doubt consider giving the change another trial at the New Zealand Cup meeting. The matter has been freely discussed since, and although there has been always much opposition to endeavouring to educate the public to a new order of things, most of the critics have changed their opinion following the Riccarton experience. Later developments in both Islands will be awaited with interest. :

Plans Changed Slayer and Whirr were booked to go out for a spell after returning home from Riccarton, but because of the decision of the Wellington Racing Club to have two steeplechases at its spring meeting, they have been kept in work. There is now a possibility of the Dunedin Jockey Club staging two steeplechase events at its spring meeting, which takes place 10 day? before the Trentham fixture opens. Several cross-country horses from Otago and Southland are likely to go north, and two such races at wingatui would no doubt be appreciated by owners and be well supported. An Interesting Point In connexion with the ban, to operate from October 1. on bookmakers owning horses in Victoria, many book-maker-owners point out that they have entered into contracts or leases approved by the Victoria Racing Club's committee which cannot be broken by the lessors without financial loss. In several such instances horses have been purchased or. leased from members of the club’s committee. Avondale Cup Nominations as follows- have been received for the Avondale Cup, of £700; one mile and a quarter.— Rakanui, Philemup, Clipper, The Cardinal, Flying Acre, Winsome Lu, Royal Appellant, Sunola, Aero King, King Key. Greek Queen, Gamos, Te Kawitl, The Dozer, Wildore, Clinch, Erndale, Algerian, Raceline, Young, Paddon, British Talent, Erlick, Noble Fox, Alexcelia, Windsor Chief, Sir Cameron, Radiant Vaals, Hunting Bee, Lovaals, Amigo, Night Pilot, Valmint.

Disqualification Removed W. Cutler, who won the Victoria Grand National Hurdles on Methuen last month, was disqualified for a year for his handling of the same horse in a hurdle race at Moonee Valley, but on an appeal to the committee of the Victoria Racing Club succeeded in getting the disqualification removed.
