JOINING SHIPS IN N.Z.

PERMISSION NECESSARY

DESERTIONS AT OVERSEAS PORTS ALLEGED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 25.

No one can get work as a member of the crew of an overseas ship without the permission of the Director of National Service, This provision has lately been introduced to prevent men from signing on with the intention of leaving the ship ,at the first opportunity, according to . a statement made by Mr C.- G. Camp, who appeared on behalf of the Shipowners’ Federation at to-day’s sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board, when 126 appeals, made by various shipping companies on, behalf of seamen, on the grounds of the public interest, were dealt with. “We found that a large number of men left the .Dominion with overseas ships as. members of the ‘ crew,, and jumped the ship at the first free port of call. . It is young men we are watching. We know that some have been deliberately joining up with a ship with the intention of jumping the ship at the first available opportunity." Eleven of the appeals were struck out, seven adjourned for a month, and the rest adjourned sine die. Among those struck out were appeals on behalf of reservists' now on overseas ships. Their position will be reviewed if and when they return to New Zealand. ’
