Wing Commander Humphrey Bevan and Mrs Bevan (Government House, Wellington), who are visiting Christchurch, will leave for Wellington tonight.

Mrs R. S. Kent (Riccarton), who has been visiting, returned to Christchurch by aeroplane on Tuesday.

Miss E. Bull (Christ’s College) will leave on Monday for Marlborough, where she will be the guest of Mrs G. Rogers, Pelorus Sound. Mrs R. H, Hill (Christchurch), who has been staying with her sister, Miss Nancy Howell, Timaru, is now the guest of Mrs J. Peter, Geraldine.

NEXT-OF-KIN PARTY

A happy feeling of kindness and good-fellowship prevailed at the Welcome Club yesterday afternoon, when the concert hall was filled, not by members of the armed forces, but by the mothers and wives of men serving overseas. They were enjoying one of the parties arranged at regular intervals by the Next-of-Kim Club and a very successful party it was. After a short prayer, offered by Dean Warren, all the guests were welcomed by the president, Mrs Cuthbert Thornton. Then followed community singing. led by Mrs Westby Sheppard, with Miss Doris Webb as accompanist, and several songs sung by -Miss Helen Hodgins, for, whom Mrs J. C. Cullman played the accompaniments. Tea was served in the dining-room upstairs.

The monthly meeting of the Harewood branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held, Mrs Orchard presiding over a good attendance. Karsten. headmistress of the Avonside Girls’ High School, will spend the term holidays in Nelson. • A well-known resident of the Clevedon district, Miss Jessie Munro, has died suddenly, For 14 years she was secretary of the Clevedon Tennis Club, and she also wore Auckland representative hockey colours- on several occasions. She was a member of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, holding a seat on the provincial council of the organisation and also being secretary of the housekeeping division of' the Waitemata provincial council and a member of the patri-. otic committee. She was a member of the Horticultural Society. When her brother left on active service Miss Munro took over his duties on the directorate of the firm of Hawthorn and Munro, For many years she was district librarian. A staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church., she was a member of the choir and superintendent of the Sunday School.

Mrs Ann Burgess, M.8.E., whose in-terest-in the welfare of soldiers during the last war has become so widely known for its continuance on behalf of former servicemen during the last 23 years, has now shown still further practical interest in the men of the various services in the present war by a gift of £5 a month, for the purpose of providing frse teas for men at the New Plymouth Army. DANCE AT AKAROA

At a social and dance held in the Oddfellows’ 'Hall, Akaroa, in honour of Privates Norman and Lennox Curry, Rex Davis, and Writer Neil Prendergast, R.N., other guests of honour were Gunner E. Barwick, Privates H. Dalglish, J. Hayward, H. McDonald, and Aircraftsman R Kingston. Dance music was played by Messrs Mclntosh (2), and extras were given by Misses Molly Narbey and Shirley Coull. Mr C. Dalbeth was master of ceremonies. Mr R; Bruce, Deputy-Mayor, made presentations to Privates Norman and Lennox Curry, Rex Davis, and Writer Prendergast, from residents of Akaroa, and handed them gifts from the girls’ knitting class. Women members of the Lyttelton Patriotic Society assisted by members of the Lyttelton Ladies’ Guild of the British Sailors’ Society held a successful bridge party at the Seamen’s Institute yesterday. The proceeds were for the entertainment of men of the Merchant Navy. Several donations were received from those unable to attend. and about £5 was realised. Mrs F. Anderson. . vice-president of the guild, thanked the organisers for their efforts.
