HILLSIDE WORKSHOP DISMISSALS
e MINISTER’S EXPLANATION
(P.R.) WELLINGTON, August 20T' “We cannot have men sitting idle round the workshops,” said the Minister for Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) in an interview to-day. He explained that of the 22 boilermakers, reported at a sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Dunedin to have been dismissed from Hillside, 14 had been found work at' their trade, and the names of the other casual Workers had been handed to the State Placement Officer, and work would be fodnd for them.
The Minister said the main reason for the dismissal of the casual workers was a shortage of materials. The main purpose of his recent visit to Australia was to secure continuity of supplies of steel for the construction Of minesweepers at Port Chalmers. Preliminary work for the building of those vessels was proceeding, and work would be available for boilermakers in‘due course. ‘ “We have ijo Pleasure in putting men off,” Mr Semple said. “We had to do it for causes over’ which we had no control.”
