CHEESE FOR EXPORT

AMOUNT AVAILABLE FOR BRITAIN

MR A. HALL EXPLAINS HIS STATEMENT

(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, August 20. An explanation of the reason for tbt statement that he had been told'by the Director of the Dairy Division that 160.000 tons of export cheese was assured for the present season, was made by the chairman of the Mangorei Dairy Company, Mr A. Hall. Mr Hall, said that when two officers of the Dairy Division waited on the Mangorei Com* 'pany directors, and emphasised the necessity of transferring the bulk of the company’s butter-fat into cheese, shareholders gave the directors authority to erect a factory on a site approved by the two division officers. Plant and equipment were ordered, but a licence was refused by the Director of the Dairy Division. . Mr Hall and two other representatives of the company thereupon inter* viewed the director, Mr W. M. Single* ton. "I was informed that' now the amount of cheese decided • on was 160.000 tons, the new unit would not be required, as that quantity would be obtained by a system of double shifts in existing factories, and me reopening of closed buildings,” said Mr Hall. “When asked if allowance had been made for a less bountiful season, the director stated that a percentage had been allowed. In reporting to shareholders the reason for‘the non* erection of the buildings, I mentioned the fact that we had been assured that the cheese would still be obtained.
